New York Guide

Manhattan and Beyond

Most first-time visitors focus on Manhattan — Midtown's skyscrapers and Times Square, Lower Manhattan's financial district and 9/11 Memorial, and the parks and museums around Central Park. But Brooklyn (Williamsburg, DUMBO), Queens (diverse food scenes) and the other boroughs reward a second visit or an extra day.

The city is best explored on foot combined with the subway — walking between neighborhoods gives a much better sense of how they connect than jumping straight from landmark to landmark.

Getting Around

The subway runs 24/7 and is by far the fastest way to cover distance, though it can feel overwhelming at first — download an offline map or transit app before you arrive. A 7-day unlimited MetroCard or the tap-to-pay OMNY system both work out cheaper than single fares if you're taking more than a couple of rides a day.

Taxis and rideshares are widely available but slow in Manhattan traffic, especially during weekday rush hours — the subway is usually faster for cross-town trips.

Best Time to Visit

Late April to June and September to early November offer the most comfortable weather and are considered the shoulder seasons — fewer crowds than summer, milder than winter. December is magical for holiday lights and windows but also the most crowded and expensive month of the year.

Summer (July–August) is hot and humid, while January–February brings the coldest weather but also the lowest hotel prices outside the holidays.

How Many Days Do You Need

Four to five days lets you see Midtown, Lower Manhattan, Central Park, and one or two additional neighborhoods (like Brooklyn) at a comfortable pace, with time for a Broadway show and a couple of museums.

If you only have a weekend, prioritize based on interest — art and history lean toward the museums and Lower Manhattan, while entertainment and shopping lean toward Midtown and Times Square.
