East Coast vs West Coast

The Big Picture

The East Coast is history, dense cities and old-world charm — think New York, Washington D.C., and Boston within a few hours of each other by train. The West Coast is space, scenery and a slower, outdoor-driven pace — Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle spread across a much wider stretch of coastline, best explored by car.

If your trip is under two weeks, it's genuinely difficult to combine both well; most first-time visitors pick one coast and go deep rather than trying to cover the whole country.

Cities and Culture

East Coast cities are compact and walkable, with excellent public transport connecting them — New York to D.C. by train takes about three hours. The West Coast's cities are further apart and built around driving, but each has a distinct identity: LA's entertainment industry energy, San Francisco's tech and hills, Seattle's coffee and greenery.

For museums, Broadway shows and a classic 'big city' trip, the East Coast wins. For a road trip through varied landscapes — coastline, desert, redwoods — the West Coast has the edge.

Weather and Best Season

The East Coast has four distinct seasons, with beautiful fall foliage (Sept–Oct) and cold winters. The West Coast, especially California, has milder year-round weather, making it a more forgiving choice if your travel dates are fixed.

Pacific Northwest cities like Seattle and Portland do get significant rain outside summer, so June–September is the best window there.

Cost of Travel

Both coasts have expensive hub cities (New York and San Francisco are consistently among the priciest in the country), but the West Coast often works out more expensive overall because a road trip covers greater distances with higher fuel and rental car costs.

The East Coast's train network (Amtrak's Northeast Corridor) can keep inter-city costs down if you're not renting a car.
