The Visa Waiver Program (ESTA)

Citizens of around 40 participating countries can travel to the USA for tourism or short business trips (up to 90 days) without a traditional visa, using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) instead. The application is done online, is valid for two years or until your passport expires, and should be completed at least 72 hours before travel, though applying earlier is recommended.

Not every nationality qualifies for the Visa Waiver Program — check the official list of participating countries before assuming you're eligible.

Standard Visitor Visas (B1/B2)

If your country isn't part of the Visa Waiver Program, or if your trip exceeds 90 days or involves other activities not covered by ESTA, you'll need a B1 (business) or B2 (tourism) visitor visa. This requires an online application (DS-160 form), a fee, and typically an in-person interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Visa processing and interview appointment availability can vary significantly by country and season, so it's worth starting the application process several months before your planned travel dates.

What You'll Need to Apply

For both ESTA and visitor visas, you'll typically need a valid passport, a recent photo meeting specific requirements, and details of your planned trip (though a locked itinerary usually isn't required for ESTA). Visitor visa applications also require demonstrating strong ties to your home country and sufficient funds for your trip.

Keep confirmation of your approved ESTA or visa with you when travelling, alongside your passport, even though it's electronically linked to your passport number.

Entering the Country

On arrival, immigration officers ask about the purpose and length of your visit — having a rough itinerary, return flight details, and accommodation information ready (even informally) tends to make this process smoother.

Visa Waiver Program entry doesn't guarantee admission; the final decision rests with the Customs and Border Protection officer at your port of entry.
