Flights
International flights vary enormously by origin and season, but booking 2–3 months ahead and flying mid-week generally brings the best fares. Domestic flights within the USA can add up quickly if your itinerary covers multiple distant cities, so factor these into your overall budget early.
Consider whether an open-jaw ticket (flying into one city and out of another) suits your route better than backtracking to your original entry point.
Accommodation
Hotel costs vary hugely by city — expect to pay considerably more in New York, San Francisco and Miami than in Midwest or Southern cities of similar size. Budget travellers can expect to pay roughly $80–150 per night for a mid-range hotel or private hostel room outside the most expensive cities, more within them.
Short-term apartment rentals often work out cheaper than hotels for stays of four nights or longer, particularly for families or groups.
Food and Daily Spending
A moderate daily food budget (mixing casual and sit-down meals) runs roughly $50–80 per person per day in most cities, higher in expensive food destinations like New York. Remember to budget for tipping (15–20% at restaurants) on top of the menu price plus sales tax.
Grocery store meals and food trucks can bring daily food costs down significantly compared to restaurant dining for every meal.
Transport and Activities
A rental car typically runs $40–80 per day depending on the vehicle and season, before fuel, tolls and parking, which can be significant in major cities. Theme park tickets (Disney, Universal) generally run $120–180+ per person per day, while national park entrance fees are much lower, typically $20–35 per vehicle for a week's access.
Budgeting an extra 15–20% contingency on top of your planned costs is sensible, given how easily incidental spending (parking, snacks, souvenirs) adds up on a USA trip.
