USA Packing Guide

Pack for the Region, Not Just the Season

Because the USA spans so many climates, a single packing list rarely fits the whole country. A trip covering both San Francisco and Las Vegas in the same week, for example, needs both a light jacket for coastal fog and breathable clothing for desert heat.

Check the specific weather for each city on your itinerary rather than relying on a general 'summer' or 'winter' assumption — regional differences within the same season can be significant.

City Break Essentials

Comfortable walking shoes matter more than almost anything else for a city trip — cities like New York and San Francisco involve a lot of walking, often on uneven or hilly pavement. Layers are useful year-round, since air conditioning indoors can be strong even in summer.

A day bag with a secure zip is handy for museums, markets and public transport, and most attractions expect a bag check on entry.

National Park Packing

Sturdy hiking shoes, a refillable water bottle, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), and layers for temperature swings between morning and afternoon are essential for park visits. Many parks are at higher elevation, where sun exposure is stronger and nights are colder than the daytime heat suggests.

A basic first-aid kit and offline maps are worth packing too, since cell signal is unreliable or absent in many parks.

Beach and Warm-Weather Trips

Lightweight, breathable clothing, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, and a light rain jacket (for destinations like Florida with frequent afternoon showers) cover most beach-destination needs.

Even warm destinations can have surprisingly strong air conditioning indoors — a light layer for restaurants and transport is worth including even on a beach trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pack differently for different US regions?

Yes — climates vary enormously by region and even within the same state, so it's worth checking city-specific forecasts rather than packing for one general 'USA climate'.

What should I pack for a national park trip?

Sturdy footwear, sun protection, a refillable water bottle, and layers for temperature swings between morning and afternoon.

Is a rain jacket necessary?

For Florida and the Pacific Northwest, yes — both see regular rain. For desert regions like Arizona and Nevada, it's less essential.

Should I pack a universal adapter for the USA?

Only if you're travelling from a country with a different plug type or voltage — the USA uses 120V and Type A/B plugs.
