Australia's Seasons Are Reversed
Because Australia is in the southern hemisphere, summer runs December to February and winter June to August, the opposite of Europe and North America. This matters a lot for planning, since the best time depends heavily on which part of the country you're visiting.
East Coast (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane)
September to November (spring) and March to May (autumn) offer the most comfortable weather with fewer crowds. December to February is peak beach season but busy and can be very hot, especially inland.
Great Barrier Reef & Tropical North
June to October is dry season with the best reef visibility and comfortable temperatures. The wet season (November-April) brings humidity, stinger jellyfish and possible cyclones.
Red Centre (Uluru) & Outback
May to September (winter) is by far the best time — daytime temperatures are pleasant for hiking, while summer can be dangerously hot, often exceeding 40°C.
